All About Tags And How They Can Help The Internet Marketer

Tags are the new keywords.

You see them everywhere, in blog directories, in video repositories, in social networking websites.  They are often presented as a group of words inside a block.  The hottest tags are printed with bigger fonts and at a higher intensity.  The less popular tags, on the other hand, have smaller fonts and lighter colors.

But what are tags, exactly, and why should you care?

Tags Are More Than Just Novelties

Introduced a couple of years ago in direct opposition to the mechanical indexing methods performed by search engines, tags are devices that empower the actual internet users themselves to properly categorize content according to their appropriate classification.

Conversion Rate Optimization
Search engines are powered by search engine spiders, robotic little creatures that crawl through each and every web page on the internet.  These spiders index the web pages according to the search engine’s predefined algorithms.  This is an automated process, one which does not involve human discernment.  Everything is in black and white.  There is no room for gray areas.

Hence, it was likely that some pages will be improperly indexed.  Search engine spiders are machines, after all.  They will not be able to appreciate the real intent of the contents they index.

Enter tags.  Websites that use tags encourage people to categorize certain pages according to their appropriate groups… which are labeled with tags.  A website about insect control, for example, can be indexed by a visitor or by the webmaster himself under the tag “pesticide” or “insecticide.”  This makes it easier for other people to find such a web page.

The Marketing Benefits Of Tags

Tags have become useful for online businessmen.  There are 2 reasons for this:

1. Websites can be classified under their appropriate tags.  This will ensure that they will be found by the people who are meant to view them.  Additionally, under the tagging system, the web page with the newest update will appear at the very top of the results.  Hence, tagging encourages the addition of fresh content, and allows savvy internet marketers to position their websites favorably well just by regularly updating their web pages.

2. Tags can serve as excellent tools for market research.  Hot tags are quite prominently displayed, and the system is amazingly up-to-date.  Hot tags are displayed in real time, and any changes to the internal rankings will reflect on the fly.  Hence, internet marketers who are looking for hot niches need only to study the hottest tags of the moment.

The Many Applications Of Tags

Currently, tags are being used in a variety of ways.  Studying them will ensure that the online businessman will have the requisite knowledge to capitalize on this emerging technology and use the same for the success of his online business.

1. Tags are being used in blog directories to properly classify newly published entries.

2. Tags are being used in social networking websites such as MySpace to cross reference people who share the same interests and passions.

3. Tags are being used in multimedia repositories such as YouTube to make it easier for users to find the audio and/or video files they are looking for.

Experts predict that in a few years time, tags will replace search engines as the information finding method of choice of internet users.  The tagging system is more reliable and credible, given the fact that such is implemented using human faculties.  Also, tagging is fast.  No need to wait for days before a page is properly indexed.  Everything transpires instantaneously.  You web page will appear under the correct category as soon as you inform the tagging system of your entry’s publication.

Start Viral Marketing Campaigns Using E-books

Viral Marketing sounds like something bad but it is actually something very good. It is, also, a powerful way to generate traffic to your website. Think about how a virus spreads from on person to another. One person gets sick and just by sneezing they can give the virus to many more people… those people get sick and share their germs with everyone they know and the next thing anybody knows is that there is an epidemic. That is the very concept of viral marketing. The idea is to get everyone to spread your marketing message around because they want to.  Now let’s look at using an E-book to start your viral marketing campaign. First you create an E-book… a really good one that has links to your website, to your sales page and affiliate links to products and services that you recommend… and you give it to three people. In the book you encourage those three people to give it to their friends and family. Before you know it the E-book is spreading across the Internet li...

The Irony of Information Overload

When it comes to Internet marketing, there are a number of woeful ironies. None is worse than the irony of informational overload. Whenever someone asks for advice from seasoned Internet marketers, they will almost always get a reply that goes something like this “first, develop an information base through self-education; then, take action and continue to stay abreast with new developments.” Digital Media Marketing This is excellent advice, but unfortunately, many people fail in the self-education phase. They attempt to take in too much too fast – and are unable to analyze any of it well enough to actually put it into practice. This is also apparent in non-IM niches. Many people who simply receive too many information products will often stop reading them altogether. Even though they could benefit greatly from the information, they have developed a negative connotation that prevents them from considering it. This is important to keep in mind when attempting up-sal...
